Marathon Bungie early access extraction shooter PC PS5 Xbox sci-fi FPS ShoortMedia

The wait is almost over. On March 5, 2026, Bungie will unleash Marathon into early access, marking their triumphant return to the sci-fi universe that started it all. This isn't just another shooter; it's a $39.99 extraction shooter designed to compete directly with Escape from Tarkov and The Cycle: Frontier.

We've gathered all the intel from the closed beta and recent developer streams to give you a head start.

The Setting: Tau Ceti IV

Players will drop into the abandoned research colony of Tau Ceti IV, a derelict Martian moonscape now overrun by alien fauna and rival Runner factions. The lore is deep, but the gameplay loop is simple: extract valuable artifacts, upgrade your gear, and survive at all costs.

Three Factions to Join

At launch, you can align with one of three Runner factions, each offering unique daily contracts and gear specializations:

  • The Sentinels: Focused on defense and heavy weaponry.

  • The Scavengers: Prioritize stealth and resource gathering.

  • The Arbiters: Specialize in fast-paced combat and close-quarters engagements.

Early Access Maps & Missions

The early access build will feature three distinct extraction zones:

  1. The Nexus: A multi-level industrial complex, ideal for vertical combat.

  2. The Glass Desert: An open, irradiated wasteland with limited cover but high-tier loot.

  3. The Crucible: A former research facility with tight corridors and dangerous AI.

Launch Day Tips

  • Solo vs. Squad: While you can go solo, squads of three are highly recommended for your first few drops.

  • The "Runner Kit": Don't forget to equip your Starter Runner Kit. It provides a basic weapon, health pack, and one extraction point use.

  • Beta Wipe: All progress from the closed beta has been wiped, so everyone starts fresh on March 5th!

Will Marathon be the next big extraction shooter, or will it fall short of Bungie’s legacy? Tell us your predictions below!
